Many of us work hard at producing our business or nonprofit email marketing communications. But, if few recipients open our messages and click our links, what’s the point?

As much as I don’t like the results of the newest study on email subject lines, I am obligated to share them with you regardless. Shorter subject lines work.

As a writer and marketer, I wish I could say more in subject lines. I want to use descriptive words that hint at the content. But, I need to discipline myself to keep them shorter as much as it pains me.

The latest from Mailer Mailer - Email Marketing Metrics Report - says, “A boring subject line can dissuade recipients from opening the message, even if they know and trust the sender. Picking the right words, on the other hand, can convince recipients to open a message, which may lead to further engagement.”
